about us

We are Ashish Ghosh and Arunima Dutta Ghosh, an artist couple from Santiniketan. Studio Mrittika was founded in 2005 as a unique space where a hub of artists, craftsmen, designers and architects can come together to transform traditional crafts into contemporary products and sculptures.

The studio stands as a testament to the blending of traditional Indian craftsmanship with modern design sensibilities, while supporting the local artisan community.

Our core values are simple,
our work as spontaneous as life.

Human-centred

None of the pieces ever made in this studio has an exact replica. We do not believe in mass production of art, and embrace every mark of imperfection of human hand that comes with each hand-built piece. Empowering the community and employing locals and tribals of the region is more fruitful than mechanic perfection.

something out of nothing

The main materials used in the making process are scraps and bits that people rarely expect to find in art. The objective is to make something out of whatever is available, abundant and cheap. Given the studio’s semi-rural environment, this includes clay, stone, wood and twigs, scrap metal, broken shells, broken ceramics, dried pits, and much more. Call us a dumping ground that creates magic!

design, minus the rules

Here, materials decide the design, not the other way around! If copper plates can fit in the design of a wooden chandelier, then so be it! We are a museum of bizarre combinations that somehow work well. And no blueprint or mould of a design already sold is kept. No exact replicas allowed :]
